Blog: Trump and his never-give-up-strategy continue the fight on Obamacare

President Trump has tweeted a possible new inducement to gain real negotiations. He threatened to cut off federal subsidies to insurance companies under Obamacare and, perhaps the more serious threat, subsidies for Congress to avoid the true costs of Obamacare. Obama garnered congressional support though executive action in which he allowed Congress an exception to the rules of his mandated healthcare coverage.

This privilege was a clear break with the Contract with America principles that helped launch the Republican House majority under speaker Newt Gingrich during the Clinton era.

Cut federal subsidies to insurance companies and the congressional exemption to Obamacare. And while you are at it, cut the taxes that were enacted automatically by the Obamacare law. (see comments)

Donald Trump, never one to throw in the towel, has begun the hardball phase of healthcare reform negotiations.  After Friday morning’s fiasco in the Senate, where three Republican senators, Collins, McCain, and Murkowski, decided to end the hopes for any compromise through reconciliation, a resolute…

The tie between Democrats, Fusion GPS, Russians and Senator John McCain

Arizona Senator John McCain was responsible for spreading the anti-Trump file among Washington’s politicians and fake news outlets, including BuzzFeed.

WASHINGTON, July 26, 2017 — Congressional Republicans made an obvious mistake. They stumbled over the truth behind the Trump-Russian collusion narrative.

They were so close to the truth, in fact, that congressional Democrats used a parliamentary procedure delay to prevent what promises to be an embarrassing public disclosure.

That is if GOP lawmakers don’t screw it up.

The threatened disclosure involves an organization that prides itself in providing “premium research, strategic intelligence, and due diligence services to corporations, law firms, and investors worldwide.”

When The Center for Medical Progress, an anti-abortion group, released damning undercover videos showing Planned Parenthood officials blithely discussing—over lunch, no less—their sale of aborted fetal parts for cash as cold and hard as their hearts, Fusion GPS was hired to research and defame the pro-life group.

A still from an undercover video of Planned Parenthood officials.

The Center for Medical Progress was later charged with 15 felony counts for recording “confidential communications” in Democratic, one-party-state California, although 14 counts were later dropped.

It’s Magnitsky, Veselnitskaya & Clinton, not Donald Trump Jr.

Fusion GPS is an important opposition-research group for the Democratic Party. It first gained popular attention when a dossier containing salacious allegations about Donald Trump’s sexual escapades while on business trips to Russia began circulating among the media and members of Congress.

The contents of the dossier were later published in their entirety on the news website BuzzFeed, which was roundly condemned by the mainstream media for publishing “unsubstantiated” charges.

Recently, much has been made of Donald Trump Jr. and brother-in-law Jared Kushner’s meeting with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya, who claimed to have information on Hillary Clinton and her dealings with Russia.

Donald Trump jr.

It turned out to be a ruse.

What Veselnitskaya really wanted was to discuss the repeal of the 2012 Magnitsky Act, which placed U.S. economic sanctions on Russian officials believed complicit in the death of Russian attorney and government-corruption investigator Sergei Leonidovich Magnitsky, and other human rights abuses.

According to Britain’s Independent,

“As part of those efforts, she [Veselnitskaya] reportedly hired investigators from GPS Fusion, a consultancy firm that helped dig up opposition research on Donald Trump.”

It seems there was Russian influence in the 2016 presidential election after all. But it was Democrats who were partners with the Russkies.

While we’re on the subject of Trump’s dossier, lawsuits filed earlier this month in the U.S. and Britain allege that a certain Arizona Senator was responsible for spreading the anti-Trump file among Washington’s politicians and fake news outlets.

“According to a new court document in the British lawsuit … [Sen. John] McCain, R-Ariz., a vocal Trump critic, and a former State Department official … [were among a] handful of people known to have had copies of the full document before it circulated among journalists and was published by BuzzFeed,” the Miami Herald reported.

Sen. McCain returns to Senate after release from hospital.

What are the chances never-Trump, GOP establishment leaders allow Republican committee chairmen to call the ailing, never-Trump John McCain, recently diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, to explain his collusion with the Democratic National Committee, Fusion GPS and Vladimir Putin’s Russia to undermine the presidency of Donald Trump?

Those chances are zilch.

Trump Threatens Congressional Health Insurance Benefits

Tweet may be prelude to rescinding employer contribution for members

President Donald Trump is considering stripping the employer contribution for health insurance away from members of Congress.

While the Trump White House has previously declined numerous requests from Roll Call to weigh in on the possibility, the president took to his favorite social media platform Saturday to make the threat himself.

“If a new HealthCare Bill is not approved quickly,” Trump tweeted. “BAILOUTS for Insurance Companies and BAILOUTS for Members of Congress will end very soon!”

If a new HealthCare Bill is not approved quickly, BAILOUTS for Insurance Companies and BAILOUTS for Members of Congress will end very soon!

The first portion of that message, regarding the cost sharing reduction payments to insurance companies to help subsidize expenses for lower-income policyholders, might get the most attention nationally.

But on Capitol Hill, the question of lawmaker “bailouts” coming to an end could be the focus.

As part of the 2010 health care law, members of Congress and many staffers were shifted out of the usual Federal Employee Health Benefits structure and into the new insurance exchanges set up by the law.

The Office of Personnel Management under President Barack Obamadetermined that the employer contribution portion of the premiums could flow through the District of Columbia’s health insurance exchange.

In recent days, calls from outside conservative groups to rescind the OPM regulation for members of Congress — either through legislative action or an executive directive — have grown.

Jenny Beth Martin of the Tea Party Patriots suggested in a statement Friday, after the Senate failed to move forward on the so-called “skinny” repeal legislation, that the entire policy should be upended, including for staff.

“To unite congressional Republicans, President Donald Trump should take action to end the congressional exemption from ObamaCare. It is apparent that since Members of Congress, their families and staff do not have to live under the law they passed for every other American, they lack the incentive to take the action they were elected to take,” Martin said. “Ending Congress’s special exemption from ObamaCare will motivate Republicans to finally keep their promise — if not for principle, at least to improve their own insurance predicament.”

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., had filed an amendment during the health care debate on the Senate floor that would have ended the payments for members of Congress. Similar proposals were long championed by former Republican Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana, whose repeated unsuccessful efforts seemed like they would never go away.

The author of one version of the original requirement that members of Congress get their health insurance through the exchanges was Sen. Charles E. Grassley. But the Iowa Republican has said that in the process of the Democrats advancing the original law, there was a drafting error.

“You understand that when we adopt an amendment in [the] Finance [Committee], unlike other committees, it’s not legal language,” Grassley told Roll Call back in 2013. “We described it. But then it went to [then-Senate Majority Leader Harry] Reid’s office and when they put it in statutory language, they screwed that up.”

Obamacare in a Trump County

We travel to Whitley County in Kentucky to find out why people who benefited most from Obamacare would vote for Donald Trump. Some thought that Trump would not actually repeal Obamacare. Others felt that Obamacare wasn’t affordable.

Wisconsin Couple Sells House to Cover Obamacare Premiums

Listen to this powerful story Sen. Johnson told about the forgotten men and women suffering under Obamacare. This Pierce County couple had to sell their house to cover skyrocketing premiums. Sen. Johnson is offering two amendments to the health care bill. One would put members of Congress in the same boat as all Americans by ending the Obamacare exemption, the other would sustain traditional Medicaid for future generations.

President Trump – Please Rescind Congressional Exemption from Obamacare

Published after show Jul 27, 2017

In an interview with Tucker Carlson of Fox News that was aired on Wednesday, Vice President Mike Pence was asked to reflect on President Trump perspective on the so-far failed efforts on the part of the Senate to produce a suitable health care reform bill. When Carlson asked Pence, “Why should Members of Congress and their staffs have a better deal, not subject to the same rules as everybody else is?,” the Vice President answered:

“That’s pretty typical of Washington, isn’t it? You, more often than not, see one set of rules for the American people and another set of rules for the political class here in our nation’s capital. but as we move forward, the point is that whether the president makes a decision, it would be his decision whether to rescind that special treatment for members of Congress and their staffs.”

He went on to say, “What we want is a health care system that works for all of the American people.” Pence explained that one element of health care reform should be cheaper coverage. “I think the primary goal first is to give people freedom over their own health care choices again,” said Pence.

Pence said that the Trump administration intends to keep its promise to repeal and replace ObamaCare.

Partial transcript follows:

CARLSON: But if after a year or two of giving people more choices, millions fewer Americans had health insurance, would that be worth it?

PENCE: Well, it’s — it’s — the very essence of living in a free society is people get to make their own decisions. But the president and I truly believe that if you lower the cost of health insurance, if you give Americans more choices in health insurance, that more Americans will choose, more employers will choose, to have and offer health insurance to their employees and have health insurance for their families.
